Genetic Testing Appointment

Genetic testing recommended? We're here to help you take the next step.

Genetic testing can help identify underlying causes of autism, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, and other neurological conditions. But getting testing completed can sometimes mean months of additional waiting.

At Brainchild Neurology, we offer focused genetic testing consultations for children and individuals with developmental or neurological conditions who have already been evaluated by a physician and recommended for genetic testing.

What's included?

Initial consultation | 30 minutes, in person

Dr. Stomel will review your medical history, your referring physician's assessment, and any previous testing. He'll perform a focused physical examination to help determine which genetic tests are appropriate and arrange testing through a specialized genetic laboratory.

Results consultation | 30 minutes, via telehealth

Once your results are available, you'll meet with Dr. Stomel to discuss the findings, what they may mean for your care, and any recommended next steps or genetic counseling.

What do I need before scheduling?

A previous physician evaluation and recommendation for genetic testing are required to qualify for this appointment.

Before scheduling, please submit:

  • Your physician's consultation or evaluation note documenting your diagnosis, clinical findings, and recommendation for genetic testing, including relevant diagnostic codes.

  • Any previous genetic testing results, if applicable.

Our team will review these records to confirm that a focused genetic testing consultation is appropriate.

Haven't had a medical evaluation yet?

If you have not yet been evaluated by a physician, or your records do not establish the medical need for genetic testing, a comprehensive neurological or developmental evaluation may be needed instead.

Understanding the whole picture.

Genetic testing doesn't always provide a definitive answer, but it can offer valuable information to guide medical care and future planning.

Families deserve more than a test result. They deserve to understand what it means.

Genetic laboratory testing is billed separately through your insurance. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on your plan and the testing ordered.

You will be issued a superbill after your appointment to submit to your insurance for reimbursement with any out-of-network benefits you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a genetic testing consultation cost?

Our genetic testing consultation is $450, which includes:

  • A 30-minute in-person consultation with Dr. Stomel

  • Selection, ordering, and coordination of appropriate genetic testing

  • A 30-minute telehealth appointment to review your results and discuss next steps

Laboratory testing is billed separately through your health insurance. Any laboratory costs, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket expenses are separate from Brainchild's consultation fee. There are financial assistance programs available through our laboratory partners to make testing more accessible and affordable.

How is genetic testing performed?

Most genetic tests require a small sample of saliva, a cheek swab, or blood, depending on the test.

For tests that use cheek swabs, we can collect samples right in our office during your appointment. The process is quick, simple, and noninvasive.

Do both parents need to be present for genetic testing?

For certain types of genetic testing, collecting samples from both biological parents can help the laboratory better interpret a child's results.

Whenever possible, we recommend that both parents provide samples. However, we understand that this isn't always practical. If one or both parents are unable to attend the appointment, we can provide a collection kit to take home or arrange for a kit to be shipped directly to them.

If only one parent is available to provide a sample, testing may still be possible. We'll help determine the best approach for your family.

What are secondary findings, and can I choose whether to receive them?

Some types of genetic testing can identify changes in genes associated with health conditions unrelated to the original reason for testing. These are called secondary findings.

For example, testing performed to investigate developmental delays might also identify a genetic variant associated with an increased risk of certain hereditary heart conditions or cancers.

For tests that offer optional secondary findings, families can choose whether they would like to receive this additional information.

Dr. Stomel will explain the options, potential benefits, and limitations during your consultation so you can make an informed decision.

Does insurance cover genetic testing?

Many insurance plans cover medically necessary genetic testing, although coverage varies depending on your plan, diagnosis, and the tests ordered.

We work with specialized genetic laboratories that can assist with insurance verification and provide information about potential out-of-pocket costs.

Brainchild's $450 consultation is self-pay and is not billed to insurance.

Will I need to pay for another appointment to discuss the results?

No! Your results consultation is already included in your $450 package.

Once your results are available, you'll meet with Dr. Stomel for a 30-minute telehealth appointment to review the findings, ask questions, and discuss any recommended next steps. There is no additional charge for this included appointment.
