Comprehensive New Patient Evaluation
For the evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing care of developmental and behavioral conditions, including autism, ADHD, developmental delays, sensory processing differences, apraxia, learning concerns, and behavioral challenges.
Your child's first appointment is an 80-minute comprehensive evaluation designed to understand the whole child. Before your visit, Dr. Stomel carefully reviews your child's medical and developmental history, along with any previous evaluations, school reports, teacher questionnaires, or other relevant records. During the appointment, he performs a comprehensive neurological examination, discusses your concerns in depth, and explains his findings in clear, practical terms.
When appropriate, genetic testing can be coordinated as part of the evaluation. You'll leave with a personalized care plan, recommendations for next steps, and the opportunity to ask questions so you feel confident moving forward. After your visit, you'll receive a copy of Dr. Stomel's completed consultation note, along with any referrals, prescriptions, laboratory orders, school accommodations, or additional recommendations discussed during your appointment.

Follow Up Visit for Established Patients
For established patients requiring ongoing neurological care, medication management, developmental follow-up, or review of new concerns, testing, or treatment recommendations.
Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes and tailored to your child's individual needs and may include monitoring developmental progress, adjusting medications, reviewing school or therapy updates, discussing new symptoms or concerns, interpreting test results, or refining your child's care plan. We believe ongoing care is a partnership, giving families the time to ask questions, track progress, and ensure each child continues to receive thoughtful, personalized support.
After your visit, you'll receive a copy of Dr. Stomel's completed follow-up note, along with any prescriptions, referrals, laboratory orders, or recommendations discussed during the appointment.
For follow-up care, we offer telehealth as an option if it works better for your family.

Frequently Asked Questions
What concerns can be evaluated during a Developmental Neurology Evaluation?
This appointment is appropriate for concerns including autism, ADHD, developmental delays, speech and language differences, sensory processing differences, learning challenges, behavioral concerns, emotional regulation, and other developmental or neurological conditions. If you're unsure whether this is the right appointment, we're happy to help before you schedule.
How is autism diagnosed?
Dr. Stomel diagnoses autism through a comprehensive clinical evaluation using DSM-5 criteria. This includes a detailed developmental history, a neurological examination, direct observation, and information from parents, schools, therapists, and previous evaluations when available. Every child is unique, and the evaluation is tailored to their individual strengths, challenges, and developmental profile.
Do you perform ADOS or CARS testing?
Brainchild Neurology does not routinely use the ADOS as part of autism evaluations. While the ADOS can be a helpful assessment tool in certain situations, it is not required to diagnose autism and can be a time intensive and expensive process. Dr. Stomel diagnoses autism using DSM-5 criteria and a comprehensive clinical evaluation.
When appropriate, the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) may be incorporated as one component of an autism evaluation. Families who require formal CARS scoring for school, services, or other purposes can also request a dedicated CARS evaluation in addition to their intake appointment. Learn more about CARS evaluations, pricing, and scheduling.
How is ADHD diagnosed?
ADHD is diagnosed through a comprehensive clinical evaluation. Dr. Stomel considers your child's medical and developmental history, current symptoms, neurological examination, and information from parents and teachers. Standardized rating scales, including the Vanderbilt Assessment Scales, are used when appropriate to gather information from multiple settings. For some children, computerized cognitive testing with CNS Vital Signs (CNSVS) may also be recommended to provide additional information about attention and cognitive functioning.
Will my child receive a diagnosis at the first visit?
Often, yes. Many children receive a diagnosis and personalized care plan during their initial evaluation. If additional information or testing is needed before reaching a diagnosis, Dr. Stomel will explain the reasoning and discuss the next steps.
What should I bring to my child's appointment?
If available, please upload or bring previous evaluations, IEPs or 504 Plans, school reports, teacher questionnaires, therapy evaluations, imaging or EEG reports, genetic testing results, and any other records you feel would be helpful. If your child has not had previous evaluations, that is completely okay.
Is genetic testing available?
Yes. When appropriate, genetic testing can be coordinated as part of your child's evaluation. Dr. Stomel will discuss whether testing is recommended based on your child's history, examination, and diagnosis. In most cases, samples can be collected at your visit and testing coordinated with one of our partner genetic testing companies. The cost of the testing will be run through your insurance and can be covered depending on your plan, it is not part of our practice fee.
What happens after the evaluation?
You will leave with a personalized care plan and recommendations for next steps. After your visit, you will receive Dr. Stomel's completed consultation note, along with any referrals, prescriptions, laboratory orders, or additional recommendations discussed during your appointment.
Will you help coordinate my child's care?
Yes. When appropriate, we provide referrals for therapies, additional specialists, imaging, laboratory testing, or community resources. We also communicate with your child's primary care provider and provide documentation that can be shared with schools and other members of your child's care team.
How often will my child need follow-up visits?
Every child is different. Some families return only as needed, while others benefit from ongoing care for medication management, developmental monitoring, or neurological follow up. Dr. Stomel will recommend a follow-up schedule based on your child's individual needs.
Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
Most families do not need a physician referral to schedule an appointment. However, some insurance plans require a referral for out of network reimbursement. If you are unsure what your plan requires, we are happy to help before your appointment.
